The Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, has presented cheques totalling ₦2,483,354.01 to families of police officers who died in the line of duty and serving personnel who sustained injuries while carrying out their duties.
The cheques were presented on Tuesday on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, under the Nigeria Police Force’s Group Life Assurance, Group Personal Accident and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.
The Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police.
According to the statement, the beneficiaries included families of officers who lost their lives while performing their constitutional responsibilities, as well as serving police personnel who suffered various injuries in the course of their service.
The payment also covered outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies following earlier partial settlements.
Speaking during the presentation, Adewale said the intervention represented more than the payment of financial benefits, describing it as part of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel and the families of officers who died while serving the country.
The Commissioner acknowledged that financial compensation could not replace a lost family member or remove the difficulties associated with injuries sustained in service. He, however, said the payment would provide practical assistance to the affected families and injured personnel.
Adewale also assured the beneficiaries that the sacrifices made by police officers in the discharge of their responsibilities remained recognised by the Force.
He urged serving officers to remain committed to their constitutional duties, adding that welfare interventions were intended to support personnel and families affected by the risks associated with police service.
The Bayelsa Police Command said it would continue to support initiatives aimed at addressing the welfare needs of officers and families affected by death or injury in the course of police duties.
The Bayelsa disbursement follows a wider welfare intervention by the Nigeria Police Force earlier in September. On September 3, 2026, IGP Disu presented more than ₦2.317 billion to 2,971 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers under the same welfare and insurance schemes. The national payment included outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies after earlier partial settlements.
The latest presentation in Bayelsa therefore forms part of the broader effort by the police authorities to settle outstanding welfare and insurance benefits owed to affected personnel and their families.
For the beneficiaries in Bayelsa, the payment provides financial support following the loss of family members or injuries sustained while serving in the Nigeria Police Force.
