Kwara PDP Names Former Governorship Aspirant Omar Gambari Campaign Director-General

The Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State has appointed former governorship aspirant Omar Bolaji Gambari as Director-General of its campaign organisation for the 2027 governorship election.

The appointment was agreed at an expanded meeting involving the party leadership and its governorship candidate, Suleiman Bolakale Kawu, and was presided over by the state chairman, Isa Adamu. The party announced the decision through its Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Adewara, in a statement issued in Ilorin on Wednesday.

According to the PDP, Gambari was selected because of his professional experience, organisational capacity, knowledge of Kwara's political environment and engagement with young people across the state.

The party also highlighted Gambari's background in international law, finance, entrepreneurship, real estate, agriculture and community development, saying his experience would be relevant to coordinating a campaign organisation involving people from different backgrounds and generations.

Gambari had previously sought the PDP's governorship ticket for the 2027 election. He was among the aspirants who participated in the process that eventually produced Kawu through a consensus arrangement. He subsequently stepped down and agreed to support the consensus candidate.

The party said Gambari's continued involvement in its political activities after withdrawing from the contest contributed to the decision to appoint him to lead the campaign organisation.

His appointment comes as the Kwara PDP continues to reorganise its political structures ahead of the 2027 election. In August, the party announced the dissolution of its caucuses across the state's 16 local government areas as part of an internal restructuring exercise intended to refresh its structures and broaden participation.

The appointment also comes against the background of earlier disagreements within the Kwara PDP over its governorship ticket. In June, reports emerged that rival factions had produced different candidates, although the faction associated with the state party leadership had backed Kawu following the consensus process.

The latest appointment therefore represents another step in the party's preparations for the 2027 governorship contest. Gambari will be responsible for coordinating the campaign organisation as the party works to mobilise its members and supporters across the state.

The PDP's decision also places a former aspirant in a senior campaign position after he withdrew from the contest and accepted the consensus arrangement. Whether the appointment contributes to broader coordination within the party will depend on how the campaign organisation operates and how the party manages its existing internal differences.

For now, the appointment establishes Gambari as a central figure in the PDP's campaign structure for the 2027 Kwara governorship election, while the party continues efforts to reorganise its structures and prepare for the electoral contest.
