The presidential candidate of the National Rescue Movement, Esther Nkem Okereke, has pledged to tackle insecurity, hunger, unemployment and other challenges facing Nigerians if elected president in the 2027 general elections.
Okereke made the commitment on Tuesday while inaugurating the NRM Presidential Campaign Council, describing the new campaign structure as a “rescue team” for the country.
She said her campaign would focus on what she described as structure, evidence and peaceful political participation rather than political rhetoric. According to her, the NRM wants to address insecurity and other problems that have affected Nigerians while promoting what the party describes as accountable and constitutional governance.
The candidate said the party’s approach was based on principles including legality, constitutionalism, accountability, transparency, national unity, peaceful participation and the rule of law.
Okereke also said the campaign council had been organised across the country, with directorates at the national level and structures covering the six geopolitical zones, the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as local government areas and wards.
She directed members of the council to follow the established chain of command and warned against unauthorised statements or the creation of parallel structures within the campaign organisation.
The NRM presidential candidate has previously outlined security measures as part of her broader policy agenda. In an August interview, she proposed increased funding for security agencies and community policing, arguing that residents with knowledge of their local environments could play a role in protecting their communities. She also linked security challenges to other national problems, including electricity shortages and corruption.
At the party’s presidential primary in May, the NRM said its policy framework included 24 pillars covering security, economic reforms, education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, institutional strengthening and infrastructure. The party said it would seek to modernise Nigeria’s security architecture and strengthen intelligence gathering.
Okereke has also made specific proposals in other areas. She previously said she would make electricity a priority and pledged to raise power generation to 25,000 megawatts within her first 100 days in office if elected. She argued that improved electricity supply would also assist efforts to identify and address other security challenges.
The latest pledge therefore forms part of a broader campaign platform rather than a standalone security proposal. However, the measures announced by the candidate remain political commitments that would depend on implementation, available resources, legislation where necessary and the effectiveness of government institutions.
The NRM campaign council will now be responsible for taking the party’s message to voters as the 2027 election approaches. The Independent National Electoral Commission has included Esther Nkem Okereke among the presidential candidates on its published final list for the election.
