OAU Final-Year Student Dies in Ile-Ife as Police Investigate Circumstances

A final-year student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Oluwole Oluwaseun, has died in an incident at an off-campus apartment in the city, with the police investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

Oluwaseun was a student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the university. The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at an apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.

The university said it received information about an emergency involving the student at about 1:30 p.m. Its Quick Response and Security Team immediately proceeded to the location, while officers from the Nigeria Police Force ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, were contacted and joined university security personnel at the scene.

The student was subsequently taken to the university’s Health Centre, where a medical doctor certified him dead.

Following the incident, the university handed relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police to assist with the investigation. Authorities are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

The Osun State Police Command has described the incident as a suicide, according to its spokesperson, while the university has continued to refer to an investigation into the circumstances of the death. No information has been publicly established regarding what may have led to the incident, and the university has urged members of its community to avoid speculation or the circulation of unverified information.

The development has left students and members of the Materials Science and Engineering community mourning the loss of a colleague who was nearing the completion of his university education.

OAU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences to Oluwaseun’s family, friends, classmates and colleagues. He also expressed concern for students and other members of the university community who may be emotionally affected by the incident.

The university has notified relevant student affairs authorities to provide necessary follow-up, particularly concerning the welfare and support of students affected by the tragedy.

OAU also urged students experiencing severe emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures or other personal challenges to seek help from trusted people and appropriate university support structures.

The university management stressed that no student should feel compelled to face overwhelming difficulties alone and reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of students and staff.

The police investigation remains ongoing, while the university said further information would be communicated through appropriate official channels where necessary.
