Pete Edochie Advises Men to Maintain Financial Independence in Marriage

Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has advised married men to avoid becoming financially dependent on their wives, arguing that husbands should strive to remain capable of providing for themselves and their families.

Edochie shared the view while appearing on Isbae U’s interview programme, Curiosity Made Me Ask, where he reflected on his nearly six decades of marriage and his understanding of marital responsibilities.

The 79-year-old actor said men should not take lightly the possibility of having to rely on their wives for basic needs. He warned that if circumstances changed and a wife had to provide food for her husband for several days, the man could face ridicule and emotional pressure.

Edochie presented the argument from the perspective of traditional marital expectations, where the husband is generally expected to play a major role in providing for the household. He said his position was informed by his long experience in marriage rather than a theoretical view of relationships.

His comments have also reopened discussion about financial responsibility in modern marriages. While some Nigerians agree that men should work towards financial independence and take responsibility for their families, others argue that marriage should allow couples to support each other during periods of unemployment, illness or financial difficulty.

In many households today, both spouses contribute financially, and there are marriages where the wife earns more than the husband or temporarily becomes the main provider. That reality has made traditional expectations around who should provide for a family increasingly subject to debate.

Edochie’s message, however, was clear: men should work towards being financially stable rather than making dependence on their wives a permanent arrangement. His remarks have consequently sparked wider conversations about gender roles, dignity, financial pressure and changing expectations within marriage.
