Tinubu Mourns Former Kogi Governor Ibrahim Idris, Describes Death as Painful Loss

President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, describing his passing as a painful loss to his family, Kogi State and Nigeria.

Idris died in the United Kingdom on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at the age of 77. His death has prompted condolences from political leaders, associates and people across Kogi State.

In a condolence message issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed sympathy to the Idris family, the Kogi State Government and people, as well as the former governor’s friends, associates and political colleagues.

Tinubu described Idris as a committed public servant whose years in office formed an important part of Kogi State’s political and developmental history. The President said the former governor devoted a substantial part of his life to public service and the development of the state.

Idris served as governor of Kogi State from 2003 and completed his tenure in January 2012. His administration was associated with interventions in infrastructure, education, healthcare and other sectors.

The President also acknowledged Idris’s involvement in Nigeria’s democratic development and his years of participation in public affairs.

“His passing is a painful loss to his family, Kogi State and Nigeria. At this difficult moment, we must remember and honour his contributions to the growth of his state and our nation,” Tinubu said.

The President extended his deepest condolences to the late governor’s family and the people of Kogi State, while praying for the repose of Idris’s soul.

Tinubu also prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive the former governor’s shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Aljannah Firdaus.

The death has also led to an official period of mourning in Kogi State. Governor Ahmed Ododo declared three days of mourning and ordered the Nigerian and Kogi State flags to be flown at half-mast across government offices and designated public institutions. The state government also announced that Idris would receive a state burial.
