Kai Havertz Reveals the Personal Ritual Behind His Long-Sleeved Football Shirts

Arsenal and Germany forward Kai Havertz has explained why he continues to wear long-sleeved football shirts even when temperatures reach 45°C, revealing that the choice is linked to a personal ritual that makes him feel more comfortable on the pitch.

Havertz discussed the unusual habit during a Reddit question-and-answer session in September 2026, explaining that he struggles to play in short-sleeved shirts because he dislikes looking down and seeing his arms uncovered.

The German international described the preference as something that developed over time and has become part of his routine whenever he prepares to play. He said his mind continually tells him to wear long sleeves, making it difficult for him to switch to a short-sleeved shirt.

The forward also recalled turning up for a World Cup setting and a training camp in Singapore wearing long sleeves despite the intense heat. He said people laughed at his choice, particularly given the high temperatures, but he continued to follow the habit.

His explanation suggests that the clothing preference is not driven by a need to conceal his arms or by a publicly disclosed medical condition. Instead, Havertz presented it as a personal routine that helps him feel comfortable while playing.

The revelation is consistent with comments he made in a German Football Association social media interview in 2024. During that conversation, Havertz said he could not play in short-sleeved shirts and explained that he did not like looking down and seeing his arms. A teammate helped him describe the habit as a ritual.

Although the choice may appear unusual to supporters, footballers often develop individual routines around match preparation, equipment and clothing. Such habits can become familiar parts of a player's preparation, even when other people do not understand the reason behind them.

Havertz's comments offer a glimpse into a personal preference that has remained consistent across different competitions and weather conditions. While the heat might persuade many players to choose lighter clothing, he appears content to stick with what feels right to him.

The forward has not suggested that other players should follow the same approach. His explanation is simply that long sleeves have become an established part of how he likes to play football, regardless of the temperature.
