Kane edges Mbappé in Ballon d’Or race as organisers reveal narrow winning margin

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane defeated Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé by fewer than 41 points to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, according to Vincent Garcia, editor-in-chief of France Football, which oversees the prestigious individual football award.

Garcia disclosed the narrow margin after Kane was crowned the winner at the ceremony held at the London Palladium on Monday, October 26, 2026. His comments highlighted how closely contested this year’s race was between the England captain and the France international.

According to Garcia, the difference between Kane and Mbappé was smaller than the 41-point gap separating Rodri and Vinícius Júnior in the 2024 Ballon d’Or voting. That result had already been regarded as a close contest.

Garcia explained that Mbappé had led the race for a significant period during the voting process before Kane gained ground and eventually secured the award.

The France Football chief described the final contest as extremely tight, with only a small number of points separating the two leading candidates. The detailed voting results are expected to provide a clearer picture of how the journalists ranked the players.

Kane’s victory followed an outstanding 2025/26 campaign in which he scored 73 goals in 65 appearances for Bayern Munich and England across all competitions. His performances helped Bayern retain the Bundesliga title and win the DFB-Pokal, strengthening his case for the individual honour.

The striker also finished as the Bundesliga’s leading scorer for the third consecutive season and scored 14 goals in the Champions League as Bayern reached the semi-finals.

Mbappé, meanwhile, enjoyed a productive campaign with Real Madrid and finished second in the voting. Despite his impressive individual performances, he missed out on the award as Kane emerged ahead of him in one of the closest contests in recent years.

The result represents a major milestone for Kane, who became the first Englishman in 25 years to win the men’s Ballon d’Or, following Michael Owen’s triumph in 2001.

The 2026 ceremony also recognised other outstanding performers in world football, with Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal finishing third in the men’s rankings.

Garcia’s comments have added further interest to the outcome, with fans now awaiting the complete voting breakdown to understand how the leading contenders compared across the journalists’ ballots.

Although the exact point difference between Kane and Mbappé has not yet been disclosed, the organisers’ comparison with the 2024 result confirms that the margin was narrower than 41 points.
