The Edo State Police Command is investigating the death of Matthew Uwuigbe, a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, who was found dead in a hotel room following an encounter with a 21-year-old woman in Ekpoma, Edo State.
The incident occurred at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, within Esan West Local Government Area. Police said they received a report about the incident at approximately 8 p.m. on October 5, 2026, and have arrested three people in connection with the case.
According to the police account, Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel and engaged the services of the woman, identified in media reports as Angela Defa Jacob. The lecturer reportedly asked her to leave the room to purchase water. When she returned, she found him lying lifeless in the room.
The woman subsequently reported the discovery, leading to police involvement. The Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident and said the hotel owner, the manager and the woman had been arrested and were assisting investigators.
The arrests form part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death. However, the police have not publicly established what caused his death, and no conclusion should be drawn about whether the reported encounter contributed to it.
Uwuigbe’s remains were deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary, according to the police. Further information about the medical findings or the outcome of any post-mortem examination had not been publicly confirmed in the reports available at the time of publication.
Ambrose Alli University has also confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff. The institution’s spokesperson, Mike Aladenika, said the incident happened outside the university campus and clarified that the woman involved was not a student of the institution.
The university’s response distinguished the lecturer’s employment at AAU from the circumstances of the incident, which occurred at a private hotel away from the campus. The confirmation established his connection to the institution but did not provide additional information about the cause of death.
The case has attracted public attention because it involves the sudden death of a university academic and the arrest of three people while police inquiries continue. Nevertheless, the available information remains limited to the reported events before the lecturer was found dead and the steps taken by investigators afterwards.
For the investigation to establish what happened, authorities will need to determine the medical cause of death and examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The accounts currently available do not establish that any of the people arrested caused the death or committed an offence.
The case also highlights the importance of distinguishing an arrest from a finding of guilt. The hotel owner, manager and woman reportedly involved remain subjects of an ongoing police investigation, and their arrest alone does not establish criminal responsibility.
As inquiries continue, further official information may clarify the events leading to Uwuigbe’s death. Until then, the cause of death remains unconfirmed, and the circumstances should be reported without speculation or unsupported allegations.
