Türkiye Mourns Victims of Fatal Military Aircraft Crash in Ondo

The Government of Türkiye has expressed condolences to Nigeria following the fatal crash of a Nigerian Air Force aircraft in Ondo State, as the country mourns the 25 people confirmed to have died in the incident and military authorities begin investigations into its cause.

In a statement issued on October 5, Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the crash. The Turkish government also extended its sympathies to the families of the deceased and the people of Nigeria.

The diplomatic message came amid widespread grief following the accident involving a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft, identified as NAF 931, which crashed near Igbokoda in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The aircraft was reportedly on a routine mission from Benin City in Edo State to Lagos when air traffic controllers lost contact with it on the morning of October 5. The wreckage was subsequently located near a naval base in the Igbokoda area, prompting search and rescue efforts involving the Nigerian Air Force and other relevant authorities.

The initial information released after the incident indicated that 32 people were aboard the aircraft. However, the Nigerian Air Force later clarified that the aircraft was carrying 25 people, comprising five crew members and 20 passengers. The service subsequently confirmed that no one survived the crash.

The difference between the initial figure and the Air Force’s later confirmation makes the official clarification important in reporting the incident accurately. The confirmed total of 25 people aboard the aircraft is the figure provided in the Air Force’s subsequent statement.

The crash has drawn a response from Nigeria’s highest authorities. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed grief over the deaths and declared three days of national mourning in honour of the personnel who lost their lives. He also directed that national flags be flown at half-mast across the country as a mark of respect.

Tinubu ordered the Nigerian Air Force to conduct a thorough investigation to establish what led to the accident. The directive is intended to help authorities determine the circumstances surrounding the crash and identify any lessons that could help prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Defence Headquarters also announced that an investigation would be conducted in line with the President’s directive. Military authorities have called on members of the public to avoid speculation and respect the privacy of the affected families while official procedures continue.

As of the latest available official information, the cause of the crash had not been established publicly. The aircraft’s loss of contact with air traffic controllers and the subsequent recovery of the wreckage are part of the reported sequence of events, but they do not by themselves establish why the aircraft went down. Any conclusion about a possible technical fault, operational error or other contributing factor would require findings from the investigation.

Türkiye’s statement adds an international expression of sympathy to the condolences received by Nigeria following the tragedy. Such diplomatic messages acknowledge the loss suffered by the affected families and the wider country, although the statement did not announce any specific assistance or new bilateral measure connected to the crash.

The incident has also renewed attention on the importance of transparent investigations when military aircraft accidents occur. Establishing the sequence of events, examining the aircraft and reviewing relevant operational information can help investigators determine the factors involved. Any findings released by the authorities will be important in providing families and the public with a clearer account of what happened.

For now, the immediate priorities remain respect for the deceased, support for their families and a credible investigation into the circumstances of the crash. Türkiye has conveyed its condolences, while Nigerian authorities have pledged to investigate the accident and provide verified information as the process progresses.
