A 20-year-old man, identified as Pascal Ogbogu, has been arrested in connection with the death of his 56-year-old father in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday evening, August 25, 2026, after the suspect allegedly attacked his father before fleeing the area. The deceased was later found inside a room, prompting a distress report to the police.
Police operatives from the Eziowelle Division responded to the report with assistance from members of the Abatete community and local vigilantes. The joint effort led to the arrest of Ogbogu in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26.
The Anambra State Police Command said the deceased's body was recovered from the scene and taken to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy. The police said the medical examination is expected to form part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said Commissioner of Police Nnanna Ama commended the family members, residents, vigilantes and police officers whose cooperation contributed to the suspect's arrest.
The commissioner also directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a more detailed investigation. The move is intended to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the facts that will guide further legal action.
The police said the suspect will be made to face due process after the investigation is concluded.
The development has drawn attention to the role of community cooperation in responding to serious crimes. According to the police, information provided by residents and the quick mobilisation of security personnel helped investigators locate the suspect after he allegedly fled the scene.
