A 35-year-old presidential candidate of the Democratic Leadership Alliance has declared his ambition to become Nigeria’s youngest president if elected in the 2027 general election.
The candidate made the declaration while outlining his political aspirations and presenting himself as part of a younger generation seeking a greater role in Nigeria’s leadership.
His claim comes at a time when age and generational change have become increasingly prominent issues in the 2027 political debate. Several younger politicians and aspirants have been presenting themselves as alternatives to the older political establishment, arguing that Nigeria needs leadership with a stronger connection to the concerns of its younger population.
At 35, the candidate meets the minimum constitutional age requirement for anyone seeking the Nigerian presidency. Section 131 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, requires a presidential candidate to be at least 35 years old.
However, being 35 does not automatically make a candidate the youngest president Nigeria has had. That distinction would depend on the candidate's age at the time of assuming office and the outcome of the election.
The candidate's statement therefore represents an ambition rather than an established political outcome. The 2027 election remains contested, with several political parties having already produced presidential candidates and preparations continuing across the country.
The Democratic Leadership Alliance has also undergone changes to its presidential ticket during the 2027 election cycle. Samuel Memeh initially emerged as the party's presidential candidate following its primary process in May.
The party subsequently conducted a substitution process after Memeh's withdrawal. Recent reports identified Adebisi Olusoji as the party's replacement candidate, while another report identified Dr Moses Adebisi in connection with the party's new presidential ticket.
That development makes it important to establish the candidate's identity and current status before publication, particularly because the DLA presidential ticket has changed during the election cycle.
The candidate's emphasis on age comes amid wider calls for greater youth participation in Nigerian politics. With young people making up a significant proportion of the country's population, political parties and candidates have increasingly focused on issues including employment, education, technology, entrepreneurship and economic opportunity.
Younger candidates nevertheless face the same electoral requirements as other presidential contenders, including securing party backing, meeting constitutional qualifications and persuading voters across Nigeria's diverse political landscape.
The 2027 presidential race is already attracting candidates from a range of political parties. INEC has published the personal particulars of presidential candidates and their running mates as part of the formal electoral process.
For the DLA candidate, the challenge will be to translate his appeal as a younger politician into a broader political programme capable of attracting voters beyond the youth demographic.
Age alone is unlikely to determine the outcome of a presidential election. Issues such as the economy, insecurity, employment, infrastructure, governance and the credibility of a candidate's policy proposals are expected to remain central to the campaign.
The candidate's declaration nevertheless adds another dimension to the growing conversation about generational change in Nigerian politics.
As campaigns progress, voters will have the opportunity to assess the competing candidates based on their experience, policies, leadership record and proposed solutions to the country's challenges.
For now, the 35-year-old's declaration remains an expression of confidence in his political prospects and his desire to present himself as a younger alternative ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
