The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has urged its candidates contesting National Assembly seats in the 2027 general elections to avoid mudslinging and focus their campaigns on issues that directly affect the people.
The party's state chairman, Peter Azubuike, made the appeal as political parties commenced campaigns for National Assembly positions ahead of the 2027 elections.
Azubuike called on candidates, party leaders and supporters to maintain peaceful and responsible conduct throughout the campaign period.
He urged candidates to present clear programmes and explain how they intend to provide effective representation and attract development to their constituencies if elected.
According to the party chairman, voters should be presented with ideas, competence, experience and records of service, rather than personal attacks and inflammatory statements.
Party Seeks Issue-Based Campaigns
The Labour Party leadership also encouraged its candidates to use the campaign period to engage voters on issues affecting their communities, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, employment and economic development.
Azubuike urged party members to respect electoral regulations and cooperate with the Independent National Electoral Commission throughout the election process.
He said responsible campaigning would help create a peaceful political environment and allow voters to properly assess the candidates seeking their support.
The appeal comes as political activities intensify across Abia State following the commencement of the 2027 election campaign season.
The Labour Party said its candidates should distinguish themselves through their programmes and capacity to serve rather than through attacks on political opponents.
The party also urged its supporters to avoid actions or statements capable of escalating political tensions as the 2027 elections draw closer.
