Arsenal will look to maintain their perfect start to the 2026/27 Premier League season when they travel to Villa Park to face Aston Villa on Monday night.
The defending champions opened their title defence in impressive fashion, defeating newly promoted Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium. Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and captain Martin Odegaard were all on target as Mikel Arteta’s side produced a dominant performance.
Arsenal now face an Aston Villa side undergoing significant changes after a turbulent summer transfer window.
Villa were beaten 4-0 by Brighton in their opening league match, with their difficult start compounded by the departure of several important players from last season’s Europa League-winning squad.
Among the major departures are Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins. Watkins completed a move to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal after establishing himself as Villa’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer.
Villa have attempted to rebuild their squad, with Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson arriving and former Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka also joining the club. Jackson could make his debut against Arsenal after being registered in time for the fixture.
Manager Unai Emery will hope the new additions can quickly settle into the team and help Villa recover from their heavy opening-day defeat.
The hosts will also be without midfielder João Gomes, who is suspended following his red card against Brighton. Several other players remain doubtful because of injuries.
Arsenal, meanwhile, appear to have retained the cohesion that helped them win the Premier League title last season while strengthening their squad during the transfer window.
New signing Ezri Konsa could make his Arsenal debut against his former club after completing his move from Villa. Bruno Guimarães is also back in training after missing the opening league fixture through injury and could be available for selection.
The match presents an early opportunity for Arsenal to underline their championship credentials, while Villa will be desperate to give their supporters a response following the Brighton humiliation.
Villa have previously proved difficult opponents for Arsenal at home, and last season they defeated the Gunners 2-1 at Villa Park. However, Arsenal arrive in considerably better form this time around.
The fixture is scheduled for an 8pm BST kick-off on Monday, August 31, at Villa Park.
For Arteta, victory would keep Arsenal’s perfect league start intact and provide another early statement from the defending champions.
For Emery, the encounter represents an immediate test of whether Villa’s new-look squad can begin to overcome the disruption caused by the summer departures.
