ASUU Applauds OOU Leadership as University Rises to 8th in Nigeria

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has commended the management of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, particularly Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, following the institution’s strong performance in the latest global university rankings.

OOU was ranked 2,338th globally and eighth among Nigerian universities in the July 2026 Webometrics ranking. The university also placed 57th in Africa, reflecting an improvement in its international visibility and online academic presence.

ASUU Praises OOU Management

The commendation from the university's ASUU branch highlights the progress recorded under Agboola's leadership, particularly in areas including academic development, research, infrastructure and institutional visibility.

The latest ranking adds to a series of developments at OOU under the current administration. The university has continued to introduce new academic programmes and expand opportunities for students. Earlier this year, Agboola disclosed that OOU had introduced additional programmes while also recording a significant number of first-class graduates.

The university's management has also placed emphasis on improving students' access to education. Agboola previously said the Nigerian Education Loan Fund had helped thousands of OOU students remain in school despite financial difficulties.

OOU Records Stronger Global Visibility

The latest Webometrics ranking places OOU ahead of many Nigerian universities and among the country's leading institutions based on the ranking's assessment of web visibility and related indicators.

The university's eighth-place national position represents another milestone for the Ogun State-owned institution, which has been working to strengthen its academic profile and international presence.

The development comes amid broader improvements recorded by Nigerian universities in international rankings. Nigeria increased its representation in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings to 24 institutions, according to the Federal Ministry of Education.

For OOU, the latest ranking is expected to further strengthen the institution's reputation as it continues efforts to improve teaching, research, innovation and academic infrastructure.
