Barcelona Bring Back Cancelo on Free Transfer to Strengthen Defence

Barcelona have completed the return of Portuguese full-back João Cancelo, signing the defender on a free transfer as they strengthen their squad ahead of the new La Liga season.

The Spanish champions confirmed on Thursday that Cancelo has signed a contract running until June 30, 2029, after terminating his contract with Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal.

The 32-year-old is returning to Barcelona for his third spell with the club. He previously spent the 2023/24 season on loan from Manchester City before returning to Camp Nou on loan from Al Hilal during the second half of the previous campaign.

Cancelo Reunites With Flick

Cancelo's return means he will once again work under head coach Hansi Flick, with whom he enjoyed a successful second spell at the club last season.

The Portuguese defender became an important part of Flick's plans after arriving during the January transfer window and helped Barcelona retain the La Liga title.

His ability to operate on either flank gives Flick additional tactical flexibility, particularly at left-back where he is expected to compete with Alejandro Balde for a starting position.

Cancelo's versatility and experience are expected to provide Barcelona with another reliable option as they prepare for the demands of the 2026/27 campaign.

Barcelona Secure Experienced Defensive Option

The deal represents a significant addition for Barcelona without the club having to pay a transfer fee.

Cancelo left Al Hilal after the Saudi club agreed to release him from his contract, allowing him to return to Barcelona as a free agent. Reports indicate that the player's strong desire to return to Camp Nou played a major role in the move.

Cancelo has already undergone his medical examination in Barcelona, with the club completing the formalities surrounding his return.

The move gives Flick another experienced defender capable of contributing both defensively and in possession as Barcelona look to defend their domestic title and compete strongly across all competitions.
