Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has directed his aides to withdraw a complaint filed against social commentator and businessman, Denis Odama, following his detention over comments made against the governor.
Otu said he had been fully briefed on the matter and, as a father and leader, directed the aides involved to withdraw their complaint against Odama.
The governor also directed the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to urgently review the case and take the necessary steps to discontinue the prosecution.
The move is expected to pave the way for Odama's release from the correctional centre and allow him to reunite with his family. Odama had reportedly been detained for about a week after a complaint was filed against him by some of the governor's aides.
The case followed a controversial statement made by Odama concerning the governor. The complaint resulted in his arrest and subsequent detention as authorities pursued allegations connected to his online comments.
Governor Otu's intervention comes amid public discussion about freedom of expression and the treatment of government critics. The governor said his decision was guided by his position as a leader and father, while directing the relevant authorities to bring the matter to an end.
