DSS Arrests Suspected Impostor Wearing Fake Uniform in Abuja

The Department of State Services has arrested a man accused of impersonating a DSS operative in Abuja and allegedly using a fake uniform and weapon to intimidate and extort motorists.

The suspect, identified as Moferewa Maiye, was arrested by DSS operatives at his hideout around NITEL Junction, along Adetokunbo Ademola Way in Wuse II, following what the Service described as credible intelligence.

Maiye, who reportedly claimed to be from Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State, was allegedly found wearing a DSS tactical uniform and carrying a fake pistol when he was arrested.

According to a security source, the suspect allegedly used the uniform and imitation firearm to intimidate commuters and motorists and extort money from them.

Suspect Claims Uniform Belonged to Late Brother

During interrogation, Maiye reportedly told investigators that his brother, identified as Monday Maiye, had been a DSS personnel before his death several years ago.

He allegedly claimed that the DSS uniform and other items found in his possession belonged to his late brother.

Investigators are now working to establish how the suspect obtained the official-looking uniform and equipment and how long he may have been involved in the alleged impersonation and extortion activities.

DSS Continues Investigation

The suspect remains in custody while questioning continues.

The investigation is expected to establish whether Maiye acted alone and whether other individuals may have been involved in providing him with the uniform or other security-related equipment.

The arrest has also highlighted concerns over individuals who impersonate security personnel to intimidate members of the public or commit other offences.

Authorities have continued to warn against the misuse of security uniforms and symbols, particularly when they are used to deceive or threaten civilians.

The DSS is expected to provide further details as investigations into the case progress.
