Ebonyi Octogenarian Murdered, Police Launch Investigation

An 80-year-old man, identified as Amos Onwe Ubochi, has been reportedly murdered in Osege Village, Umuogodo Oshia Ngbo community, in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Ubochi was said to have left his residence on Monday, August 17, 2026, but failed to return home. His body was discovered the following day along a bush path within the community.

According to reports, the deceased had earlier participated in a political prayer session for candidates of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). He reportedly led a group of elders during the prayer session before leaving for his home.

Community sources alleged that Ubochi was attacked while returning from the gathering. His body was reportedly dragged away from the road and dumped in a stream located within a thick forest.

The circumstances surrounding the killing have raised concerns among residents, particularly because of the reported timing of the incident and the deceased's participation in the political gathering.

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the death and commenced an investigation to establish exactly what happened and identify those responsible.

Police spokesperson SP Joshua Ukandu said officers visited the location after receiving information about the discovery of the body. The deceased was subsequently taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, where he was confirmed dead before his remains were deposited in the morgue.

The police command said investigators are working to unravel the circumstances surrounding Ubochi's death and determine the motive behind the killing.

The command also appealed to members of the public with useful information about the incident to come forward and assist the investigation.

Meanwhile, the APGA House of Representatives candidate for the Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency, Tochukwu Ogalagu, condemned the killing and called for those responsible to be brought to justice.

Ogalagu described the death as painful and urged his supporters to remain calm while security agencies investigate the incident.

The incident comes at a time when political activities are increasing across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political parties and their candidates have begun holding consultations, meetings and other activities to strengthen their support bases.

Authorities are expected to continue investigating the killing to establish whether it was politically motivated or connected to another dispute.

Residents have also been urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies as the investigation continues.
