Retired military personnel have suspended their planned protest after the Federal Government assured them that their concerns over pension adjustments and other welfare issues would be addressed.
The decision followed a meeting between representatives of the ex-servicemen and officials of the Ministry of Defence at Ship House in Abuja on Wednesday.
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), represented at the meeting by the Permanent Secretary, Richard Pheelangwah, assured the veterans that the government was committed to resolving their concerns over pensions, remuneration and welfare.
One of the protest leaders, Colonel Innocent Azubike (retd.), confirmed that the retirees had agreed to suspend the planned demonstration following the government's assurances.
The ex-servicemen had been demanding the implementation of consequential adjustments to their pensions following salary increases approved for serving members of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
The retirees argue that corresponding adjustments should be made to their pensions to reflect the increases granted to serving personnel.
Following the assurance from the Defence Ministry, the protesters dispersed and suspended further action while awaiting concrete steps from the government.
The development provides temporary relief in the pension dispute, although the veterans' demands will now depend on the government's implementation of the commitments made during the meeting.
