Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has said Peter Obi weakened his chances of winning the 2027 presidential election after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Fayose made the statement while discussing the prospects of opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. He argued that the opposition would have been stronger if its major political figures had remained united under one platform.
According to Fayose, the decision by Obi and other opposition politicians to move away from the ADC reduced the possibility of mounting a strong and united challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said Obi had the potential to make a significant impact when opposition politicians were working together, but maintained that the former Anambra State governor's decision to leave the ADC had changed the political equation.
Fayose described Obi as a capable Nigerian who had made a significant impact in politics and demonstrated that change was possible. However, he argued that opposition parties would continue to struggle electorally if they failed to work together.
The former governor also suggested that the opposition had already gone too far in its preparations for the 2027 election to easily reverse the current political arrangements.
He noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission had already accredited the various candidates and political platforms, making a major last-minute realignment difficult.
Fayose further argued that the experience of the 2023 presidential election had given the ruling party a better understanding of Obi's political strategy and campaign approach.
On President Bola Tinubu's chances in 2027, Fayose said the political situation in the South-West currently appeared favourable to the President. He projected that Tinubu could secure a significant number of votes from the region based on existing political alignments and the voting pattern recorded during the 2023 election.
Fayose's comments come as political parties and opposition figures intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential contest, with questions over coalition-building and the ability of opposition parties to present a united alternative to the APC.
