Fire Outbreak Destroys Five Shops in Kwara Market

 A fire outbreak has destroyed five shops at a market in Kwara State, causing damage to traders’ businesses and prompting a swift response from firefighters.

The incident occurred in the state as firefighters were mobilised to prevent the flames from spreading to adjoining shops and other properties. Preliminary information from the Kwara State Fire Service indicated that the affected shops were exposed to the fire before emergency personnel arrived at the scene.

Firefighters responded quickly and deployed firefighting equipment to contain the blaze. Their intervention helped prevent the fire from spreading further across the market and reducing the scale of the damage.

The incident has once again raised concerns about fire safety in markets, where tightly packed shops, electrical connections and combustible goods can allow fires to spread rapidly.

Fire authorities have repeatedly urged traders and business owners to maintain safe electrical connections, avoid overloading sockets and ensure that functional fire extinguishers are available within their premises.

Market operators have also been advised to keep access routes clear so that emergency vehicles can reach affected areas quickly whenever an outbreak occurs.

The latest incident adds to a series of market and shop fires recorded in Kwara State in recent months. Earlier in the year, a major fire at Mandate Ultra-Modern Market in Ilorin destroyed 24 shops, with a power surge identified as the suspected cause.

Another fire at Owode Market in Offa destroyed six shops and a large hall containing food items, with property damage estimated at about N15 million. Firefighters said property worth approximately N45 million was saved during the operation.

The repeated incidents have increased calls for traders and market authorities to strengthen fire prevention measures and ensure that emergency response arrangements are in place.

Authorities are expected to continue assessing the latest incident and determine the circumstances surrounding the outbreak.
