Four Nigerian nationals have been arrested in India over their alleged involvement in a drug trafficking network, with narcotics valued at approximately ₹15 crore (about ₦2.1 billion) reportedly recovered during coordinated operations.
The arrests followed a series of operations by India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), state police and other security agencies targeting suspected drug trafficking activities involving foreign nationals.
The investigation reportedly began on July 18 after intelligence provided by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force led investigators to Khanpur in Delhi.
Authorities subsequently carried out another operation on July 21 at Hans Enclave in Gurugram, where a Nigerian national identified as Abuchi George Okorie was arrested.
The operations were reportedly part of a wider investigation into suspected narcotics distribution networks operating across different locations in India.
Indian authorities said the investigation also involved individuals accused of immigration violations, including overstaying visas after their authorised periods of stay had expired.
According to investigators, intelligence gathering and coordinated surveillance helped security agencies identify locations allegedly connected to the suspected trafficking network.
The drugs recovered during the operations were said to have a combined estimated street value of about ₹15 crore, highlighting the scale of the alleged operation.
Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the full structure of the suspected network, including the source of the drugs, how they were transported and distributed, and whether other individuals were involved.
The arrests come amid continued efforts by Indian law enforcement agencies to tackle international drug trafficking networks and the activities of foreign nationals allegedly involved in organised crime.
The suspects are expected to face further legal proceedings as investigators continue gathering evidence in the case.
Indian authorities have also been working with different security agencies to identify other people who may have links to the alleged trafficking operation.
The arrests underscore the increasing attention being paid to cross-border drug trafficking and the use of international networks to move narcotics between countries.
