Pep Guardiola is widely regarded as one of football’s greatest managers, but his demanding methods and uncompromising approach have also led to difficult relationships with some of the biggest names he has coached.
From his time at Barcelona and Bayern Munich to his decade at Manchester City, several high-profile players have experienced disagreements, falling-outs or strained relationships with the Spanish tactician. A recent documentary has also shed new light on Guardiola’s explosive clash with former Manchester City captain Kyle Walker.
Here are nine notable players whose relationships with Guardiola became complicated.
1. Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Perhaps the most famous Guardiola fallout involved Zlatan Ibrahimovic during his single season at Barcelona.
The Swedish striker joined Barcelona in 2009 but struggled to maintain a good relationship with Guardiola. Ibrahimovic later openly criticised the manager, describing him in extremely harsh terms.
Their relationship deteriorated further after Ibrahimovic became frustrated with his tactical role and lack of playing time. He eventually left Barcelona for AC Milan.
2. Kyle Walker
Walker’s relationship with Guardiola became increasingly strained toward the end of his Manchester City career.
A newly released Amazon documentary revealed an intense confrontation between the pair after City’s defeat to Liverpool in December 2024. Walker accused Guardiola of repeatedly targeting him and questioned whether the manager genuinely wanted him as captain.
The defender subsequently left City, initially joining AC Milan on loan before later moving to Burnley.
3. João Cancelo
Cancelo was once one of Manchester City’s most important players, but his relationship with Guardiola deteriorated rapidly.
The Portuguese full-back was sent on loan to Bayern Munich in January 2023 after losing his place in the team. Guardiola subsequently allowed him to leave permanently.
Cancelo later claimed that “lies” had been told about him and accused City of being ungrateful despite his contributions to the club.
4. Samuel Eto’o
Eto’o was another major Barcelona star whose relationship with Guardiola became uncomfortable.
The Cameroonian striker remained at Barcelona after Guardiola arrived but later spoke critically about their relationship, saying their personal connection was not what he had hoped for.
Eto’o eventually left Barcelona for Inter Milan, where he won the Champions League under José Mourinho.
5. Yaya Touré
Touré worked with Guardiola at both Barcelona and Manchester City, but their relationship became particularly controversial at City.
The Ivorian midfielder publicly accused Guardiola of having problems with African players. Touré later apologised for those comments, admitting that what he had said was wrong.
6. Joe Hart
Guardiola's arrival at Manchester City also brought an abrupt end to Joe Hart's position as the club's first-choice goalkeeper.
Hart recalled Guardiola telling him shortly after his arrival that he did not believe the goalkeeper possessed the qualities he wanted in his system.
Claudio Bravo was subsequently brought in, while Hart was sent away from the club.
7. Cesc Fàbregas
Fàbregas spent only one season playing under Guardiola at Barcelona, but their relationship later became strained.
The former Arsenal midfielder subsequently admitted that he no longer had a relationship with Guardiola, despite having regarded him as an idol and learning a great deal from him.
Fàbregas also indicated that there had been disappointment on both sides.
8. Alexander Hleb
Hleb's Barcelona career never developed as expected, and his relationship with Guardiola was reportedly difficult.
The Belarusian midfielder later admitted that he was partly responsible for the problems, explaining that he resisted some of Guardiola's instructions and reacted badly to the manager's demands.
With hindsight, Hleb said he understood why Guardiola had made certain decisions.
9. Dante
Dante's relationship with Guardiola during their time together at Bayern Munich was also far from perfect.
The Brazilian defender criticised Guardiola's communication with players, arguing that the manager could be exceptional tactically while being less effective on a personal level.
Despite the tension, Guardiola led Bayern to three consecutive Bundesliga titles during his time in Germany.
Guardiola's Demanding Management Style
Guardiola's career has been defined by extraordinary success, but his insistence on tactical discipline, intense training standards and strict positional requirements has occasionally created friction with established stars.
The recent revelations surrounding Walker demonstrate that even players who have enjoyed enormous success under Guardiola can eventually find themselves at odds with him.
From Ibrahimovic at Barcelona to Walker at Manchester City, the pattern is clear: Guardiola's teams may be built around a collective philosophy, but not every superstar has been comfortable operating within it.
