Funke Akindele Draws Online Criticism Over Birthday Celebration Amid Ogogo’s Burial

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has faced criticism on social media after sharing birthday posts on the same day veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, was laid to rest.

Akindele celebrated her birthday on August 24, sharing messages of gratitude and prayers while reflecting on another year of her life and career. Her birthday coincided with the burial of Ogogo, whose death at the age of 66 had triggered widespread mourning across the Yoruba film industry.

Some social media users criticised the timing of Akindele’s posts, arguing that the entertainment industry was still mourning Ogogo and that more sensitivity should have been shown on the day of his burial.

Others, however, defended the actress, pointing out that her birthday is a personal milestone and that celebrating it does not necessarily mean she was insensitive to the death of a fellow entertainer.

Akindele has remained one of the most prominent figures in Nollywood, with a career spanning acting, filmmaking and production. She has also worked with several major figures in the Nigerian film industry over the years.

Ogogo, meanwhile, was buried in his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, according to Islamic rites. His funeral attracted family members, colleagues, friends and admirers who gathered to pay their final respects to the veteran actor.

The late actor was remembered for his decades-long contribution to Yoruba cinema and his role in promoting indigenous storytelling and culture.

The controversy surrounding Akindele's birthday post has generated mixed reactions online, with supporters and critics expressing different views about whether the timing was inappropriate or simply coincidental.

Despite the criticism, Akindele's birthday celebrations continued as fans and colleagues also sent her messages of goodwill and prayers for another successful year.
