A humanoid robot has attracted attention online after successfully recreating Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous ‘Siuuu’ goal celebration during a football demonstration.
The robot was shown taking part in a football activity before jumping into the air, rotating and landing with its arms stretched out — closely imitating the celebration that has become one of Ronaldo’s most recognisable trademarks.
The demonstration highlights how quickly humanoid robots are developing the ability to perform complex movements that require coordination, balance and control of the entire body.
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and NVIDIA previously developed an artificial-intelligence framework called ASAP, designed to help humanoid robots learn agile, full-body movements from human motion. Their experiments included teaching a robot to reproduce Ronaldo’s mid-air celebration, as well as basketball moves associated with Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.
The system works by using human movement data and then adapting those movements to the physical capabilities of a robot. Researchers also use real-world robot data to reduce the differences between simulated movements and what the machine can actually perform.
The ability to reproduce athletic movements represents an important development in humanoid robotics. Instead of robots being limited to simple walking and mechanical actions, researchers are increasingly working toward machines capable of jumping, kicking, squatting and performing other coordinated movements.
Ronaldo’s celebration has become particularly suitable for such demonstrations because it involves a sequence of highly recognisable movements: a jump, a rotation and a controlled landing with the arms extended.
The robotic recreation has also generated amusement among football fans, with many noting the unusual sight of a machine performing a celebration that has been copied by players and supporters around the world.
While the robot can reproduce the movement, researchers acknowledge that humanoid machines still have considerable room for improvement before their movements can match the fluidity and athleticism of professional athletes.
Nevertheless, the demonstration provides another glimpse into how artificial intelligence and robotics are increasingly being used to teach machines sophisticated human movements.
