Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps has warned that Saudi Arabia will not be able to contain Yemen’s Houthi rebels as attacks by the Iran-backed group against the kingdom intensify.
IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebi said Saudi Arabia would be unable to prevent attacks by the Houthis, also known as Ansarullah, while warning that further Saudi military action could trigger more retaliation.
He said the recent pattern of attacks showed that the more Saudi Arabia strikes, the more it faces attacks in return.
The warning comes amid a sharp escalation in Yemen, which has become another major front in the wider Middle East conflict that began with US and Israeli strikes against Iran on February 28.
The Houthis have launched attacks against Saudi-linked targets and attempted to blockade Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea ports. The escalation followed tit-for-tat strikes in July after an Iranian aircraft arrived in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.
Houthi Conflict Threatens Red Sea Security
Yemen has endured more than a decade of conflict, but the latest escalation has disrupted the relative calm created by a 2022 truce between the Houthis and the Saudi-backed internationally recognised Yemeni government.
Concerns are also growing over the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, one of the world’s most important maritime routes connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
A Yemeni minister recently accused the Houthis of planning to seize territory along the strait, potentially giving the group greater leverage over shipping through the strategic waterway. Houthi and Yemeni government sources have also indicated that the rebels are considering an advance southward from their current positions.
The development has raised fears that the renewed fighting could expand beyond Yemen and further threaten commercial shipping and regional stability.
The Houthis have increasingly demonstrated their ability to strike targets far beyond their core territory, while Saudi Arabia has sought to prevent the conflict from developing into another prolonged war along its southern border.
Iran’s latest warning signals that Tehran remains supportive of the Houthis as regional tensions continue to escalate.
