Iran has dismissed US President Donald Trump’s latest economic pressure campaign, describing it as another failed policy that will not force Tehran to change its position.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticised Trump’s plan on Thursday after the US president announced what he described as a major new economic operation aimed at isolating and weakening Iran.
Araghchi accused Washington of using economic pressure to distract attention from its own domestic financial challenges, including rising debt and interest costs.
He said continuing with what Tehran considers failed policies would only lead to further defeat for the United States and increase hostility among Iranians.
Trump Threatens Iran’s Economic Partners
Trump announced a tougher economic campaign against Iran after diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran failed to produce an agreement.
The US president warned countries and businesses that provide financial or commercial support to Iran that they could face severe economic consequences. His administration has described the strategy as an effort to impose unprecedented economic pressure and isolate Tehran.
The renewed pressure comes amid continuing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy route. Iran has linked the reopening of the waterway to demands including the lifting of the US naval blockade, removal of oil sanctions and the unfreezing of Iranian assets abroad.
Tehran Rejects Economic Coercion
Iran has repeatedly argued that sanctions and economic threats have failed to force it to abandon its policies.
Araghchi maintained that Tehran would not surrender to the latest pressure campaign, while Iran has continued to signal that it remains open to diplomacy under conditions it considers acceptable.
The confrontation has also raised concerns about global energy supplies, particularly because disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz could affect international oil markets and shipping.
The latest exchange underscores the growing divide between Washington and Tehran as both sides remain locked in a broader confrontation involving military, economic and diplomatic pressure.
