The Federal University of Technology, Babura (FUTB) in Jigawa State has announced a 100 per cent tuition and school-fee waiver for newly admitted students studying Mathematics and Physics.
The initiative is aimed at encouraging more young Nigerians to pursue careers in science and strengthening the country's workforce in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Sciences (STEMM).
The university announced the policy in a statement signed by its Registrar, Fatima Muhammad, who said the decision was part of management's efforts to make science education more accessible, particularly to students from underserved communities.
Under the programme, eligible students admitted into the B.Sc Mathematics and B.Sc Physics programmes will not be required to pay tuition or other school fees for the duration of their studies.
The university said the initiative was necessary because of the important role that science-related disciplines play in national development, despite the shortage of skilled professionals in several scientific fields.
The management explained that the waiver was designed to attract more students into Mathematics and Physics, two disciplines that are considered important for technological development, research, education and innovation.
The university also stated that the initiative would help address the relatively low interest in some core science programmes by removing financial barriers that may discourage prospective students from enrolling.
Prospective students who initially selected other courses or institutions may also be eligible to benefit from the programme, provided they meet the admission requirements for the Mathematics or Physics programmes.
Such candidates have been advised to change their institution and course to the Federal University of Technology, Babura through any JAMB Computer-Based Test centre.
The university urged interested candidates to contact its admissions office for clarification on eligibility, the change-of-institution process and other admission requirements.
The free tuition initiative takes effect from the current admission cycle, giving qualified candidates an opportunity to pursue university education in the two disciplines without paying tuition and other school fees.
The university said the programme reflects its commitment to community service and its role in expanding access to quality science education.
The initiative could also provide relief for families who may otherwise struggle to finance university education amid rising living costs and increasing educational expenses.
By removing tuition and other school fees, FUTB hopes to encourage more qualified young people to consider Mathematics and Physics as viable academic and professional pathways.
Graduates from the programmes could pursue careers in areas including teaching, research, technology, data-related fields, scientific analysis and other sectors that require strong mathematical and scientific skills.
