The Katsina State Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old man over an alleged attempted robbery and impersonation after he was reportedly caught chasing a yet-to-be-identified person while pointing what appeared to be a pistol at the victim.
The incident occurred on August 22, 2026, at about 7pm in Katsina metropolis. According to the police, information was received that the suspect was pursuing the victim and allegedly attempting to dispossess him of his belongings.
Police operatives, working alongside members of a local vigilante group, responded to the report and arrested the suspect at about 8pm at Kofar Sauri, Katsina.
A search conducted after the arrest led to the recovery of a black toy pistol from the suspect. Police said the imitation weapon was allegedly used to intimidate the victim during the attempted robbery.
The command's spokesperson, DSP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, said the suspect was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation during preliminary interrogation about how he came into possession of the recovered item.
The suspect, identified in some reports as Aliyu Sani, remains in police custody while investigations continue into the alleged offences and to determine whether he may be connected to other criminal activities.
The Commissioner of Police in Katsina State, Ali Umar-Fage, commended residents and members of the local vigilante group for their vigilance and prompt cooperation with security operatives.
He urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station, stressing that cooperation between communities and security agencies remains important in tackling crime across the state.
The allegations against the suspect have not been established in court, and he remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty according to law.
