Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, Kogi State, has expelled six 100-level students for examination misconduct after they were found to have rewritten an examination at the private residence of a lecturer.
The decision was reached during the university’s 167th Regular Senate Meeting held on August 26, 2026. The students, all from the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, were sanctioned after an investigation into the unauthorised examination exercise.
The case began on July 1, when university management received information that a lecturer was allegedly coordinating students to rewrite an examination at his residence. Security operatives subsequently arrested Dr Maji Okpanachi, a lecturer in the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, along with some students at his residence in Anyigba. Exhibits were also recovered.
The matter was referred to the university’s Examination Misconduct Committee for investigation. According to the committee’s findings, supported by statements from the lecturer and students as well as other records, the students rewrote BOT102, Introduction to Plant Science, several days after the original examination had been conducted.
The investigation further established that the affected students allegedly paid ₦10,000 each to the lecturer to participate in the unauthorised rewrite at his residence.
The six students expelled by the Senate are Itodo Ojonugwa Jeremiah, Olloh Kizito Ojoajogwu, Okpanachi Favour, Abdulkadiri Senusi, Umar Imran and Lawrence Salami.
The Senate also referred Dr Okpanachi to the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee for appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the university’s rules and regulations.
In a separate decision, the university approved the withdrawal of nine other students over poor academic performance and failure to register for two consecutive semesters.
Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Prof. Salisu Ogbo Usman, said the decisions reflected the institution’s determination to protect the credibility and integrity of its academic and examination processes.
He warned that the university would not tolerate conduct capable of undermining its academic standards and urged students to remain focused on their studies, maintain good conduct and comply with examination regulations.
The expelled students have also been directed to surrender university property in their possession, including identity cards and other official items, before leaving the institution.
