Former Kano State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has urged former Zamfara State Governor Abdul’aziz Yari to reconsider his decision to serve as Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 election.
Kwankwaso made the appeal while reacting to the recently announced APC campaign council, which has President Bola Tinubu as chairman and Yari as Director-General.
In a statement, Kwankwaso questioned Yari’s decision to lead the campaign for Tinubu’s re-election, arguing that many members of the newly constituted council had previously supported, defended or participated in the current administration.
He suggested that the composition of the council raised questions about what the ruling party would present to Nigerians during the 2027 election campaign.
According to Kwankwaso, the APC should be prepared to explain whether it is offering voters a new direction or asking them to continue with the same system that has governed the country since 2023.
He specifically appealed to Yari to reconsider his involvement, pointing to the former governor’s political experience and previous roles within the country’s political system.
Yari, however, has already begun embracing his new responsibility. Following his return from an overseas trip, he was received by supporters at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja and told journalists that the APC would fulfil the promises it made to Nigerians.
Yari expressed confidence that Tinubu would secure another term in office in 2027 and urged party members to remain united and work towards victory.
The APC campaign council is expected to coordinate the ruling party’s nationwide mobilisation, communicate the administration’s achievements and campaign promises, and work towards securing Tinubu’s re-election.
Kwankwaso’s intervention comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition parties and presidential contenders also putting their campaign structures in place.
The exchange between Kwankwaso and Yari is likely to add another dimension to the emerging political contest as parties prepare to present their records, policies and candidates to Nigerian voters.
