The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has mocked Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and the ruling All Progressives Congress following the resignation of Kwara Central Senator Saliu Mustapha from the APC.
Mustapha, a founding member of the APC, announced his resignation in a letter dated August 14, citing recent developments within the party in Kwara State. He said the decision followed weeks of consultations with stakeholders, supporters and constituents.
PDP Says APC Crisis Deepening
Reacting to the resignation, Kwara PDP Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Adewara, described Mustapha's departure as evidence of what the opposition party called deepening divisions and leadership problems within the APC.
The PDP accused Governor AbdulRazaq of failing to unite prominent members of his party and argued that the resignation of a serving senator represented a significant setback for the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.
The opposition party also referenced the recent resignation of other APC stakeholders in Kwara North, including Ambassador Kolo Jiya, as further evidence of what it described as declining confidence in the governor's leadership.
Mustapha Keeps His Next Move Private
Mustapha has not announced which political platform he intends to join next.
However, speculation about a possible move to the PDP had increased before his resignation, with reports that discussions were ongoing over his political future and the possibility of contesting on the PDP platform.
In his resignation statement, Mustapha said his decision was guided by his belief that politics should be centred on people, principles and purpose.
He thanked APC leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, for the relationships and experiences he gained while in the party and assured his constituents that his commitment to serving them remained unchanged.
APC Yet to Respond
The Kwara APC had not issued an official response to Mustapha's resignation at the time of the report.
The development comes as political realignments intensify across Kwara ahead of the 2027 general elections, with both the APC and PDP seeking to strengthen their structures and attract influential political figures.
Mustapha's next political move could therefore have significant implications for the political contest in Kwara Central and the wider state.
