The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, has warned police officers against indiscriminately searching the mobile phones of National Youth Service Corps members during roadside checks.
Adekimi issued the warning while visiting corps members participating in the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Orientation Course at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Kwara State.
According to the police command, the warning followed concerns over officers stopping people and demanding access to their phones under the guise of checking for possible involvement in internet fraud.
The commissioner stressed that corps members should be treated with dignity and respect in their dealings with security personnel. He specifically directed officers not to search the phones of corps members on the road simply because they suspect them of internet-related offences.
“No police officer should indiscriminately search through the mobile phones of corps members on the road under the guise of checking whether they are involved in internet fraud,” Adekimi said.
He also assured the corps members that the police, working with other security agencies, would continue to take measures to protect them throughout their service year and wherever they are deployed across the state.
Adekimi encouraged corps members to remain responsible in their host communities, use social media carefully and avoid digital thuggery or other activities capable of threatening peace and public order.
He urged any corps member who experiences inappropriate conduct by police personnel or has a security concern to report through the command's designated channels or visit the nearest police formation.
The commissioner also called on the corps members to regard the police as partners and to provide credible information that could assist security agencies in protecting them and their host communities.
The directive comes amid continuing concerns over roadside phone searches by security personnel. In July, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, similarly warned residents against allowing officers to randomly search their phones, stressing that phone searches should be connected to a lawful investigation rather than arbitrary roadside checks.
