Makinde Appoints Digital Media Aide as 2027 Political Activities Intensify

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has appointed a new aide to strengthen his digital media operations as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections continue to gather momentum.

The appointment comes at a time when Makinde's political activities have increased significantly ahead of the next general elections. He is currently the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement and has established a campaign structure in Oyo State for the 2027 elections.

The governor's administration has maintained a dedicated digital communication structure as part of its broader media operations. The role of a digital media aide typically involves supporting the government's presence across online platforms, communicating official activities and helping to distribute information to members of the public.

Makinde's administration has previously appointed officials specifically responsible for digital and new-media communication. The Oyo State Government's official records, for example, list Fisayo Daramola as Special Assistant on Digital Media, while other appointments have covered communication, print media, broadcast media and photography.

The latest appointment therefore comes within an already established media structure rather than representing the creation of an entirely new communications function.

Its timing is nevertheless noteworthy because Makinde's political profile has expanded beyond his role as governor. In July, he announced plans to inaugurate the Oyo State presidential and governorship campaign council of the APM, with the structure expected to coordinate mobilisation and engagement ahead of the 2027 elections.

The campaign council was subsequently inaugurated, with Dr Nureni Adeniran named chairman and also designated as the Oyo State coordinator of Makinde's presidential campaign and director-general of the state's governorship campaign. Other officials were assigned responsibilities covering different parts of the state and specific campaign groups.

The development means that digital communication is likely to become increasingly important as political parties and candidates seek to reach voters through social media and other online platforms.

For Makinde, maintaining a strong digital communication presence could help the administration and his political campaign respond quickly to public discussions, communicate policy positions and present his record to voters.

However, an appointment to a media position should not by itself be interpreted as evidence that the appointee has been given a specific political campaign mandate unless the government or campaign organisation confirms such a responsibility.

The appointment also comes amid continued political realignment in Oyo State. Makinde has been involved in discussions over the state's political future and has already selected a preferred successor for the governorship, while his political associates have been involved in preparations for the 2027 contests.

The governor's political transition plans have generated considerable interest because he is serving his second term and therefore cannot seek another term as Oyo State governor in 2027.

His attention to the presidential contest has consequently increased the importance of communication around both his record in Oyo State and his national political ambitions.

The latest appointment could therefore become relevant to how information about Makinde's administration and political activities is presented online, particularly as the election season approaches.

For the public, the key issue will be whether the expanded digital communication structure provides timely and useful information about government activities rather than simply serving as a platform for political messaging.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, political actors across Nigeria are expected to strengthen their media and digital operations as they compete for public attention and voter support.

Makinde's latest appointment is part of that wider shift towards increasingly digital political communication, with social media and online platforms playing a growing role in how candidates engage with voters.

Further details about the appointee's identity, official designation and specific responsibilities will provide a clearer picture of the role within the governor's wider media structure.
