Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has defended the decision to show Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina a yellow card rather than a red during his side’s 1-0 defeat to Leeds United.
Aina was involved in one of the major talking points of the match after he made a lunging challenge on Leeds defender James Justin in the 18th minute. The incident was reviewed by VAR after the referee initially issued a yellow card, but the decision was not upgraded to a dismissal.
The Super Eagles defender missed the ball during the challenge and caught Justin with his trailing leg. Although the tackle appeared dangerous, the officials concluded that it amounted to reckless play rather than serious foul play deserving a red card.
Dean agreed with the decision, arguing that Aina’s low body position and the nature of the contact meant the challenge did not meet the threshold for a sending-off offence.
“I think because he is low, he has missed the ball completely and his back leg has just caught the other guy. I don’t think it is a sending off,” Dean said after the match.
Aina, who started the match in a new right wing-back role, otherwise produced an encouraging performance despite Forest eventually losing the game.
The Nigerian created three chances and completed three successful dribbles, both among the best figures recorded by a Forest player during the encounter. He remained on the pitch until the 74th minute before being substituted.
Forest were ultimately denied a positive start to the new Premier League campaign when Leeds secured a 1-0 victory at the City Ground through Anton Stach’s late free-kick.
Despite the defeat, Aina’s performance offered encouragement following his return from injury and his move into a more advanced wing-back position under new Forest manager Oliver Glasner.
The 29-year-old will now turn his attention to Forest’s next meeting with Leeds in the EFL Cup, before the club faces Liverpool in their second Premier League fixture.
