Real Madrid head coach José Mourinho is confident that Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham can play effectively together despite the tactical challenges of fitting the three superstars into one team.
Mourinho made the comments ahead of Real Madrid’s opening La Liga match against Espanyol, as he prepares for his second spell in charge of the Spanish giants.
The Portuguese manager acknowledged that previous Real Madrid coaches, including Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa, struggled to find the right balance between attacking quality and defensive stability when selecting the three players together.
Mourinho Wants All Three Stars
Despite the challenge, Mourinho said he has no intention of sacrificing any of the three players.
He described Mbappé, Vinicius and Bellingham as exceptional talents and insisted their positions are not fundamentally incompatible.
Mourinho said his objective is to create a system in which all three players feel comfortable while allowing them to maximise their individual strengths.
The manager pointed out that Vinicius has thrived in Brazil's system, Mbappé has found an effective role with France, while Bellingham has also been given a system that suits him with England.
Mourinho admitted that finding a similar balance for all three at club level will be more difficult, but said his coaching staff are already working on the solution.
All 11 Players Must Defend
While Mourinho wants his attacking stars to have freedom, he has warned that their defensive responsibilities will be non-negotiable.
He stressed that Real Madrid must defend as a team, insisting that every player will be expected to contribute when opponents put pressure on them.
This could be one of the biggest tactical adjustments for Madrid's star forwards under Mourinho, particularly when the team is forced to defend deep.
Competition for Places
Mourinho also warned his players that not everyone can start every match.
The 63-year-old manager said there will inevitably be frustration when one player starts while another has to sit on the bench.
However, he wants that competition to push the squad rather than divide it.
Mourinho said he wants selection decisions to remain difficult because that would indicate that his players are maintaining high standards in training.
Mourinho Targets a Strong Madrid Revival
Real Madrid have gone two seasons without winning a major trophy, increasing expectations surrounding Mourinho's return.
The Portuguese coach said he does not view the pressure as a negative, describing it instead as “adrenaline” and a positive feeling ahead of his second debut in charge of the club.
With Mbappé, Vinicius and Bellingham at the heart of his attacking plans, Mourinho will now attempt to build a system capable of turning Madrid's collection of individual stars into a balanced and successful team.
