NSCDC Arrests Two Suspected Cattle Rustlers in Kano

 Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kano State have arrested two suspected cattle rustlers as part of intensified efforts to tackle livestock theft and other criminal activities in rural communities across the state.

The suspects were reportedly apprehended during an operation by NSCDC personnel following intelligence on the movement of suspected cattle rustlers operating in the area.

The arrest is part of the Corps’ wider efforts to protect livestock, farmers, herders and other residents from criminal groups involved in cattle rustling and related offences.

Cattle rustling remains a major security concern in parts of northern Nigeria, where criminal groups have continued to target livestock belonging to herders and communities. The illegal activity can also contribute to wider insecurity when armed groups use stolen animals as a source of income or operate alongside kidnapping and banditry networks.

Security agencies have therefore increased surveillance and intelligence-led operations in areas considered vulnerable to livestock theft.

In Kano, the NSCDC has also maintained a security presence around rural communities, grazing reserves and other areas where farmers and herders are exposed to attacks.

The Corps has repeatedly urged residents to provide timely and credible information about suspicious movements and activities to security agencies, noting that community intelligence is important in preventing criminal operations.

The latest arrests are expected to assist investigators in determining whether the suspects are connected to a wider cattle-rustling network and whether other individuals are involved.

Investigators are also expected to establish the ownership and whereabouts of any livestock linked to the suspects as the case progresses.

The NSCDC has continued to collaborate with other security agencies in Kano in responding to threats involving banditry, kidnapping and livestock theft.

In an earlier operation in Kiru Local Government Area, NSCDC personnel foiled an attempted kidnapping and cattle-rustling operation after armed attackers targeted a shepherd and abducted two people. The operatives engaged the attackers in a gun battle, forcing them to abandon the victims and flee into a nearby forest.

The development highlights the continuing security challenges facing communities in parts of northern Nigeria, where cattle rustling can have serious economic consequences for livestock owners and rural households.

For many families, cattle and other livestock represent an important source of income and financial security. The theft of animals can therefore cause significant economic hardship while also increasing tensions between communities.

The NSCDC is expected to continue its investigations into the latest arrests and determine the appropriate legal action against the suspects.
