The Ogun State Police Command has reactivated Operation VELVET across the state’s 20 local government areas as part of a renewed crackdown on traffic violations and activities that could compromise road safety.
The operation follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, with the command saying the initiative is aimed at improving traffic management, protecting road users and ensuring the free movement of vehicles along major highways.
Under the renewed enforcement, police officers will target motorists involved in driving against traffic, reckless and dangerous driving, unauthorised use of emergency sirens and the use of vehicles with missing, altered or concealed number plates.
The operation will also cover unlicensed drivers, vehicle overloading and indiscriminate parking that obstructs traffic.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, has directed area commanders, divisional police officers and heads of operational units to ensure effective implementation of the exercise across their respective areas.
The police said the enforcement is particularly focused on traffic offences that endanger motorists, passengers and pedestrians while potentially creating opportunities for criminal activities along major transport corridors.
Residents and motorists have been urged to cooperate with officers during the exercise and comply with traffic regulations.
The Ogun Police Command said Operation VELVET would be implemented professionally as it works to make roads across the state safer and improve the flow of traffic.
