Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has revealed that legendary defender Taribo West once nearly confronted Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha during a match because of the midfielder’s repeated dribbling and loss of possession.
Oliseh shared the story while discussing his former international teammate’s unique playing style and the way Nigeria’s players managed Okocha’s flair during their time together in the national team. The story has resurfaced following renewed attention on Okocha’s comments about his approach to entertaining supporters while still playing to win.
According to Oliseh, Okocha’s ability to dribble opponents often thrilled Nigerian supporters, but his teammates sometimes became frustrated when possession was lost in dangerous areas.
Oliseh explained that the defenders in the team would usually ask him to speak to Okocha because they knew he had developed a good understanding with the midfield maestro and could convince him to release the ball when necessary.
He recalled one particular match in which Okocha continued to dribble despite repeated warnings. After the midfielder lost possession several times, Oliseh told him that he was tired of constantly covering for him.
The situation became even more tense when Okocha attempted another dribble and lost the ball, allowing the opposition to move forward and nearly score.
Oliseh said Taribo West became furious and moved towards Okocha, forcing him to intervene and restrain the powerful defender from confronting his teammate.
He described Taribo as extremely competitive and someone who was determined to win every match.
The incident highlights the contrasting personalities within one of Nigeria’s most celebrated generations of footballers. While Okocha was renowned for his creativity, flair and ability to entertain crowds, Taribo was known for his aggressive defending and uncompromising approach to competition.
Despite occasional disagreements, Okocha and Oliseh enjoyed a successful period together with the national team. They were part of the Nigerian side that won the 1996 Olympic football gold medal in Atlanta and also featured in the Super Eagles team that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
Okocha's extraordinary dribbling ability ultimately became one of the defining features of his career. The former Bolton Wanderers and Paris Saint-Germain star earned 73 caps for Nigeria and became one of the country's most admired footballers.
Oliseh's story offers a glimpse into the competitive environment within the Super Eagles during that era, when talented players with very different personalities and playing styles came together to produce some of the most memorable moments in Nigerian football history.
