The Cross River State Police Command has arrested two elderly men in connection with the alleged attempted sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl in Calabar.
The suspects, identified as 70-year-old Asuquo Effiom and 68-year-old Moris Monday, were arrested on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following a complaint lodged by the girl’s father. The incident reportedly occurred in the Thomas Henshaw area of Calabar.
According to the police spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the victim alleged that Monday, a shoe repairer, lured her into his room on two separate occasions, August 13 and 14, where he allegedly attempted to sexually assault her.
The girl further alleged that Effiom similarly lured her into his room on August 22 and attempted to sexually assault her.
Following the report, police operatives proceeded to the Hawkins Road area around Thomas Henshaw Junction, where the two suspects had reportedly been held by members of the community.
The suspects were subsequently taken into police custody. Police said both men have denied the allegations against them.
The victim has been referred to a government-approved medical facility for examination as part of the investigation.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation and necessary legal action.
The police command assured the public that the matter would be handled professionally and in accordance with the law, adding that further developments would be communicated as the investigation progresses.
The arrest has also drawn attention to the need for communities to remain vigilant and protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation.
