The Enugu State Police Command has rescued three people who were abducted by suspected armed kidnappers and recovered their Lexus RX350 SUV, firearms, ammunition and other items abandoned by the fleeing suspects.
The rescue operation took place in the Independence Layout area of Enugu following credible intelligence received by police operatives at about 1:30 a.m. on August 18, 2026. The information reportedly concerned the carjacking and abduction of occupants of a Lexus RX350 by armed hoodlums.
According to the police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, operatives attached to the Anti-Cultism Sub-Unit of the Violent Crime Response Unit were on crime-prevention patrol along the Port Harcourt Expressway when they received the information and immediately moved to the area.
The operatives subsequently engaged in a hot pursuit of the suspects, which continued to Hillview Road in Independence Layout.
On sighting the approaching security personnel, the suspected kidnappers abandoned the Lexus SUV and their weapons before fleeing the area. The three victims were rescued unharmed with assistance from members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group and other residents.
Items recovered at the scene included the victims' Lexus RX350, a locally fabricated Beretta-like pistol loaded with five rounds of 9mm live ammunition, a locally made cut-to-size firearm and an additional live cartridge.
The police also recovered a pair of gloves, a ski mask and a mobile phone allegedly abandoned by the fleeing suspects.
The Enugu State Police Command said investigations have been intensified, while a manhunt has been launched to identify and apprehend the suspected kidnappers and establish their involvement in the crime.
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the police operatives, members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group and vigilant residents who contributed to the successful rescue operation.
Giwa reaffirmed the command's commitment to intelligence-led and community-supported operations against kidnapping, armed robbery, car snatching and other violent crimes.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide the police with timely and credible information that could assist in preventing criminal activities across the state.
The successful rescue comes amid continued efforts by security agencies in Enugu to tackle kidnapping and other violent crimes through intelligence gathering and collaboration with local communities.
