Presidential Election: Tinubu, Obi, Others Sign Peace Pact as 2027 Campaign Begins

Nigeria's leading presidential candidates have signed a peace accord ahead of the 2027 presidential election, pledging to conduct peaceful and issue-based campaigns as political activities gather momentum.

The peace pact was signed at a ceremony attended by candidates from different political parties, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Peter Obi and other presidential hopefuls.

The agreement commits the candidates and their supporters to reject political violence, hate speech, misinformation, intimidation and personal attacks throughout the campaign period.

The candidates also pledged to encourage their supporters to respect the law and accept the outcome of the election through lawful channels.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on political leaders and their supporters to demonstrate maturity and ensure that the electoral process remains peaceful.

The 2027 presidential race is expected to be highly competitive, with candidates likely to focus their campaigns on major national issues, including the economy, security, unemployment, governance and the rising cost of living.

President Tinubu is seeking another term in office, while opposition candidates are expected to present their own policies and programmes to Nigerians as they seek to win the presidency.

Political observers will be watching closely as campaigns intensify, particularly to see whether political parties and their supporters maintain the commitments contained in the peace agreement.

The signing of the pact is expected to help promote peaceful political activities and reduce the risk of violence as Nigeria moves toward the 2027 presidential election.

As the campaign season begins, Nigerians will have the opportunity to assess the candidates, their policies and their plans for addressing the country's major challenges before making their choice at the polls.
