Seven Die, Two Injured in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Crash

Seven people have died while two others sustained injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that the fatal accident occurred in the early hours of Monday, August 24, 2026, along the Ibafo–Lagos corridor at Kara, Ibafo. Nine people, all male, were involved in the crash, according to preliminary information released by the Ogun State Sector Command.

Three vehicles were involved in the accident: a white HOWO CNG/CIMC ENRIC, a white MACK trailer and a Mitsubishi Canter.

The FRSC Ibafo Outpost received information about the crash at approximately 4:04 a.m. and arrived at the scene around 4:09 a.m., giving an estimated response time of five minutes.

Seven of the victims were confirmed dead at the scene, while two others sustained injuries and were taken away for medical treatment. The bodies of the deceased were evacuated by the Ogun State Ambulance Service.

The FRSC identified speed violation as the probable cause of the crash, although the agency said further investigation would be required to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The vehicles involved were subsequently handed over to the Motor Traffic Division of the Nigeria Police Force at Ibafo for further investigation and necessary action.

The FRSC urged motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, to avoid excessive speed, maintain safe following distances and exercise greater caution when driving at night.

The agency also warned that reduced visibility and fatigue can increase the risk of serious road crashes, particularly on busy highways such as the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The latest tragedy has again highlighted concerns about road safety along the major corridor, which carries heavy traffic between Lagos and several parts of southwestern Nigeria.
