State governments received at least N435 billion through a special Federation Account Allocation Committee intervention for infrastructure and security between January and June 2026, according to half-year budget implementation reports from 29 states.
The funding was recorded under a relatively new intervention window known as “State Infrastructure and Security.” Although separate from conventional statutory FAAC allocations, the money was distributed to states as part of their regular FAAC revenue.
No funding was recorded under the intervention during the corresponding period in 2025.
The development comes amid growing pressure on state governments to use increased federal allocations to tackle infrastructure deficits and worsening security challenges across the country.
Atiku’s Petrol Subsidy Proposal Faces Pushback
Former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar’s proposal to restore petrol subsidy if elected president in 2027 has faced opposition from the Presidency and the organised private sector.
Atiku has made the restoration of petrol subsidy part of his economic proposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The proposal has also generated differing reactions within organised labour, with the Nigeria Labour Congress divided over the policy.
President Bola Tinubu removed the petrol subsidy during his inaugural address in May 2023. The Federal Government has continued to defend the reforms introduced since then, while Nigerians and businesses remain divided over their impact on living costs.
EFCC, ICPC Probe N12bn NFF Fund
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission have begun investigating the utilisation of a N12 billion Federal Government intervention fund released to the Nigeria Football Federation.
The money was approved in 2024 to settle outstanding wages and bonuses owed to members of Nigeria’s national football teams.
The investigation followed a request under the Freedom of Information Act for financial records and other documents relating to the fund.
The NFF reportedly declined to release the requested records, stating that the matter was already being investigated by the EFCC and ICPC.
UK Issues Travel Warning for 11 States
The United Kingdom has advised its citizens against all travel to parts of 11 Nigerian states, including Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe, citing security concerns.
The updated advisory also recommends against non-essential travel to parts of another 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The UK cited threats including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security risks, while urging travellers to research their destinations and obtain appropriate travel insurance.
