Tension has gripped Awka, the Anambra State capital, following the killing of popular advertiser and media personality, Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as Aiza, and another unidentified man by suspected gunmen.
The two victims were reportedly killed at separate locations in Awka on Sunday, August 30, 2026, in attacks that have raised fresh security concerns across the city.
Nwosu, who was well known in Awka for his work as a mobile advertiser, comedian, disc jockey and master of ceremonies, was reportedly attacked while inside his Toyota Hilux vehicle.
According to reports, the assailants allegedly trailed him from his residence in a tinted vehicle before attacking him. His bullet-riddled body was later found inside his vehicle.
The second victim, whose identity had not been established as of Monday, was reportedly shot in the head and found along another street in the city.
Police said preliminary information indicated that three unidentified men travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla were responsible for the attacks. The registration number of the vehicle was not immediately known.
The attacks reportedly occurred around Capital City Road in Amaenyi and S.M. Okeke Street in Amaikwo, Awka.
Following distress calls, police operatives were deployed to the affected locations, where they recovered the bodies of the victims. The victims were taken to a hospital and subsequently confirmed dead by medical personnel.
Police officers also recovered ₦7,550, a Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers from the scenes.
The Anambra State Police Command condemned the killings and said it had launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, had directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a discreet and comprehensive investigation.
Security operatives have also intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and neighbouring areas in an effort to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Some residents and eyewitnesses have suggested that the killings could be connected to cult-related activities. However, the police have not officially established a cult motive and investigations are still ongoing.
Nwosu was a familiar figure in Awka and was known for driving around the city in his advertising vehicle, using loudspeakers to promote businesses and make public announcements.
He also worked as a DJ, MC and radio personality and had reportedly survived previous serious incidents, including accidents.
The circumstances surrounding his killing have generated concern among residents, particularly because of reports that the attackers allegedly followed him before carrying out the shooting.
The police have appealed to residents, community leaders, motorists and business owners who may have witnessed the attacks or noticed suspicious movements to provide useful information to investigators.
Authorities said information supplied by members of the public would be treated confidentially and could assist in identifying the suspects and preventing further attacks.
The killings have renewed concerns about insecurity in parts of Anambra as security agencies intensify efforts to restore calm and bring those responsible to justice.
The identities of the attackers and their motive remain unknown, while investigations continue.
