Tinubu Pays Tribute to Ogogo, Celebrates His Legacy in Nigerian Storytelling

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the death of veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, describing him as a gifted artiste whose work made a lasting contribution to Nigerian culture and cinema.

In a condolence message issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Hassan as a distinguished artiste whose decades-long career helped advance Yoruba-language theatre and Nigerian cinema.

The President said Ogogo used his talent to tell Nigerian stories, preserve the country’s cultural heritage and entertain audiences both in Nigeria and abroad.

Tinubu also highlighted the actor’s distinctive screen presence and commitment to his craft, noting that his body of work would remain an important part of Nigeria’s cultural history.

Beyond his performances, the President acknowledged Ogogo’s influence on younger artistes, saying his mentorship and contribution to the creative industry helped strengthen his legacy.

Ogogo’s death at the age of 66 has triggered widespread mourning across Nigeria’s entertainment industry. He passed away on Sunday, August 23, after battling cancer, with colleagues, government officials and fans paying tribute to his decades of work.

The late actor was particularly influential in Yoruba cinema, where he became known for his commanding performances and commitment to indigenous storytelling. His career spanned more than four decades, during which he appeared in numerous productions and inspired younger generations of performers.

Ogogo’s remains were taken to his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, for his final rites, where family members, colleagues and admirers gathered to bid him farewell.
