Troops Rescue Kidnapped Woman, Disrupt Planned Ransom Exchange in Kebbi

 Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have rescued a woman who had been held captive in Kebbi State and disrupted an attempt by her abductors to collect ransom for her release.

The operation was carried out on Wednesday, August 26, in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area after security personnel received intelligence about a planned ransom exchange. The woman had reportedly been abducted from her farm the previous month.

Acting on the information, troops from Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA moved to the area where the ransom transaction was expected to take place.

The kidnappers reportedly noticed the advancing troops and attempted to engage them. According to the military's account, the security personnel overpowered the attackers, forcing them to retreat and abandon the woman.

The victim was found unharmed and taken to safety. She was subsequently reunited with her family in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area.

After the rescue, troops searched the route used by the fleeing kidnappers to ensure that the surrounding area was secure and to prevent the criminals from returning to the location.

The operation is part of the ongoing counter-terrorism and anti-banditry campaign being conducted by Operation FANSAN YAMMA across parts of the North-West.

Danko-Wasagu is among the areas in Kebbi that have experienced security challenges involving kidnapping and other forms of armed criminal activity. The military has consequently increased patrols and intelligence-led operations in the area.

In a separate operation, troops also conducted clearance and dominance patrols in Ngaski Local Government Area. The patrols were completed without incident, according to the military.

The latest rescue comes amid continuing efforts by security agencies to disrupt kidnapping networks in the North-West. In recent weeks, troops operating across Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara have rescued other abducted civilians during separate operations.

Ransom kidnapping remains a major security concern because criminal groups often use the threat of violence against captives to demand money from their families. Intercepting ransom exchanges can therefore prevent both the transfer of money to criminal networks and the continued captivity of victims.

The successful operation also demonstrates the importance of timely intelligence in responding to kidnapping incidents. In this case, information about the planned ransom exchange enabled troops to intervene before the transaction was completed.

However, the rescue of the woman does not mean the wider security problem has been resolved. Criminal groups operating across parts of the North-West continue to pose risks to rural communities, farmers and travellers.
