The United Kingdom has issued a fresh travel advisory warning its citizens against all travel to parts of 11 Nigerian states, citing security concerns across the affected areas.
The advisory was issued by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office on August 20, 2026, as part of its updated travel guidance for Nigeria.
The FCDO advised against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe in the North-East, as well as Katsina and Zamfara in the North-West.
In the South-East and South-South, the warning covers riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. The UK defines the affected riverine locations as river and swamp areas accessible by boat but not by road.
Other States Placed Under Essential-Travel Warning
The UK also advised its citizens to undertake only essential travel to several other parts of Nigeria.
These include Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara and Benue states.
The warning also covers Abia, Anambra and Imo states, as well as non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers. The Federal Capital Territory, including Abuja, was also placed under the same advisory.
The FCDO's latest guidance reflects continuing concerns over terrorism, kidnapping, violent crime and other security threats in different parts of the country.
UK Urges Travellers to Exercise Caution
The British government warned that no travel can be guaranteed to be completely safe and advised people planning trips to Nigeria to research their destinations carefully.
It also urged travellers to obtain appropriate travel insurance and warned that insurance policies could be affected if someone travels against official FCDO advice.
The latest advisory does not apply the same level of restriction to every part of Nigeria, with the FCDO distinguishing between areas where it advises against all travel and those where only essential travel is recommended.
The updated warning comes amid continuing security challenges across several regions of Nigeria and highlights the concerns faced by foreign governments over the safety of their citizens travelling within the country.
