Governor Ademola Adeleke has secured another term in office after defeating his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the Osun State governorship election.
According to the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Adeleke polled 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji recorded 444,815 votes.
Adeleke won 19 of the 30 local government areas, while the APC candidate won 11.
The result makes Adeleke the second governor in Osun State to secure re-election, after former Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
Youth Support Played a Major Role
One of the factors highlighted in the election was the mobilisation of young voters.
Popular Nigerian Afrobeats singer Davido, who is Adeleke's nephew, was actively involved in the governor's campaign and served as chairman of the Imole Youth Mobilisation Campaign Council.
His popularity among young Nigerians helped attract attention to the campaign and encouraged youth participation around Adeleke's candidacy.
Adeleke's Political Structure
Adeleke also benefited from a strong political mobilisation structure across the state.
His campaign maintained its presence across several communities and worked to consolidate support in areas considered important to his political base.
The governor's ability to retain support across several local government areas ultimately helped him build a winning margin over his APC challenger.
Support From Traditional Leaders
Traditional institutions also played a role in the political contest.
The Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Laaroye, was identified as one of the influential figures who supported Adeleke during the campaign.
The monarch's support was linked to his assessment of the governor's developmental projects and approach to local governance.
Civil Servants Backed the Governor
Another important factor was the support Adeleke reportedly received from civil servants in the state.
Workers highlighted issues surrounding welfare and improved working conditions as reasons for supporting the governor's re-election bid.
That support was significant because government workers form an important voting bloc in a state where the public sector plays a major role in the economy.
The APC Challenge
The APC entered the election hoping to regain control of Osun State but ultimately fell short.
Its candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, secured 444,815 votes, leaving a margin of 66,252 votes between him and Adeleke.
The outcome represents another setback for the APC in the state, after the party also lost the previous governorship election.
What Adeleke's Victory Means
Adeleke's re-election gives him another opportunity to continue his administration's programmes and pursue his development agenda for Osun State.
It also strengthens his political position ahead of the next phase of Nigerian politics, particularly as parties and politicians begin positioning themselves for the 2027 general elections.
For the people of Osun State, however, the focus will now shift from the election to governance, development and the delivery of campaign promises.
